MATCH_RECOGNIZE

Now in Beta for advanced row pattern recognition.

What it does

The MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause allows users to identify and filter patterns in ordered rows of a dataset. It supports partitioning and ordering of data, enabling complex pattern matching such as detecting trends or sessionizing events. Users can specify measures and define patterns to extract meaningful insights from their data. This feature is available in Databricks SQL and Databricks Runtime 19.0 and above.

Why it matters

This capability enhances data analysis by enabling users to detect complex patterns and trends in their datasets, which can lead to better decision-making and insights. It is particularly beneficial for financial analysts, data scientists, and business intelligence teams who need to identify patterns such as price movements or user behavior over time. By streamlining the process of pattern recognition, organizations can improve productivity and reduce the time spent on data analysis.

Key capabilities
Pattern Matching
Identify specific patterns in ordered data sequences.
Partitioning Support
Allows partitioning of data for targeted pattern analysis.
Custom Measures
Define custom measures to summarize results from matches.
Sessionization
Collapse event streams into sessions based on defined time gaps.
Prerequisites
Databricks SQL or Databricks Runtime 19.0 and above
Workspace admin access to enable the feature
Recommended use cases
Detecting consecutive price increases or decreases in financial data.Identifying V-shaped or W-shaped price movements.Sessionizing user event streams for better analysis of user behavior.Analyzing time series data for trends and anomalies.
Limitations · remember
!Currently only supports SKIP PAST LAST ROW for AFTER MATCH clause.
!Empty matches are not produced in this release.
