Transactions

Now generally available for Unity Catalog managed Delta tables.

What it does

Transactions enable users to group multiple SQL statements across one or more Unity Catalog managed Delta tables into a single atomic operation using either `BEGIN ATOMIC ... END;` or `BEGIN TRANSACTION; ... COMMIT;` syntax. This ensures that all changes either succeed together or roll back together, maintaining data consistency. Transactions support ACID properties, allowing for reliable operations in data warehousing workloads.

Why it matters

The general availability of transactions enhances data integrity and consistency, which is crucial for mission-critical applications. This feature allows data teams to execute complex operations with confidence, reducing the risk of data corruption and improving overall productivity. Organizations can now streamline their data workflows, ensuring that all related changes are committed or reverted as a single unit.

Key capabilities
Atomic Transactions
Group multiple SQL statements into a single atomic operation.
ACID Compliance
Ensure data integrity with atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability.
Support for Stored Procedures
Use transactions within stored procedures for complex data operations.
Non-Transactional Reads
Read from non-transactional sources using hints for flexibility.
Prerequisites
Tables must be Unity Catalog managed (Delta Lake or Iceberg).
Catalog commits must be enabled on participating tables.
Use Databricks Runtime 18.0 or above for non-interactive transactions.
Use Databricks Runtime 18.1 or above for transactions on OpenSharing shared assets.
Recommended use cases
Coordinating complex data updates across multiple tables.Implementing mission-critical data warehousing workloads.Ensuring data consistency in multi-step data processing tasks.
Limitations · remember
!Interactive transactions may experience conflicts that require explicit rollback.
!Transactions on Iceberg tables remain in Private Preview.
Architecture
SQL Editor → Databricks Runtime → Unity Catalog → Delta Lake
In short

You can now use transactions with Delta tables to ensure all related SQL operations succeed or fail together.
